Thomas Marzano: Thirty years inside the organisations
I founded Marzano Consulting after nearly thirty years inside organisations, to work on the brand infrastructure this new reality now demands.
I’m a strategist, designer, and systems thinker. I spent close to thirty years building brands inside Philips and ASML — not as an outside advisor, but inside the organisations where the decisions carry consequence and where the difference between a real brand and a well-dressed one becomes visible under pressure.
Philips and ASML
At Philips, I led the global rebrand 'innovation and you', built the Brand Experience Design Language System, created the Philips Sonic Identity, and developed the brand strength models that ended up in C-suite and investor reporting. Not a single one of those things was a standalone project. Every one of them had to survive leadership transitions, business pressure, and the permanent tension between what the brand needed to be and what the organisation found easiest to execute.
At ASML, I built the brand and digital function from the ground up — scaling the team, embedding audience intelligence, and creating one of the first AI Generated Brand Campaigns in 2023. I left the inside track because I wanted to work at the front edge of this shift — where the old infrastructure is dissolving and what gets built to replace it is still being decided.
The Foundational Work
I published the foundational essay on Agentic Branding in Brandingmag — defining the Legible-Lovable Law, the Brand Constitution, the trajectory from summary to inference to rendering, the Shortlist Effect, and the Brand Equity Protocol. The constitutional framework that connects them is the architecture behind this practice.
How Design Became Constitutional Strategy
My background in design is not incidental to the strategic work. It is where the work began. I started as a designer and creative director in the early days of the web, and moved through every major transformation in how humans interact with digital technology: web design, digital product, UX, service design, connected experiences, Internet of Things. Each wave changed the surface. The underlying question stayed the same: how do people actually live with this technology, and what does that mean for the brands that operate through it?
Every system I design has to pass a dual test: precise enough for a CFO, resonant enough for the people it shapes.
How I Work as an Advisor
I work as a senior strategic advisor. I don’t build dependency. I build capability, clarity, and systems that survive beyond the engagement.
I’m direct. I’m precise. I don’t produce transformation theatre or strategy documents that travel from the workshop to the shelf. Every engagement I take on is designed to leave the organisation with something it can use, govern, and build on.
